Sam is a Chartered Architectural Technologist and Professor Emeritus at Edinburgh Napier University and a visiting Professor in Architectural Technology. He has a background in professional practice, as a partner specialising in building design performance and evaluation. His university experience includes Chair of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Benchmark Statement for Architectural Technology Review which embedded BIM within the new standards, external examiner for universities undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorates. He is a Past President and currently Chair of the CIAT Education Board. He also has experience as an External examiner and accreditation assessor for professional bodies (RICS, CIOB and CIAT).
During his career in academic life he has been Professor and Director of Research in Built Environment, chair of the Research Committee for the Council of Professors of Building Engineering Management. Member of the Scottish Building Regulations Advisory Committee, SHEFC TQA Assessor (Built Environment).
Over the last 25 years Sam has led twenty major externally funded projects with a value in excess of 30 million Euros. He is also an external assessor for UK research bodies and also the Italian Government for the assessment of Research projects in Architectural Technology and Sustainability He has served on government, professional and national built environment education committees.
His main areas of research expertise are in BIM relating building performance and process mapping and sustainability, Smart Cities and knowledge management and has published and presented nationally and internationally.
