Sam is Professor Emeritus at Edinburgh Napier University and a visiting Professor in Architectural Technology at Nottingham Trent University.
His background is in professional practice, as a partner specialising in building design performance and evaluation and BIM. His university experience includes (among others) Chair of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Benchmark Statement for Architectural Technology Review, external examiner for universities for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorates.
He is a Past President of CIAT and currently Chair of the CIAT Education Board. He has experience as an External Examiner and Accreditation Assessor for professional bodies (CIAT, CIOB and RICS). During his career in academic life, he has been Professor and Director of Research in the Built Environment, Chair of the Research Committee for the Council of Professors of Building Engineering Management, a member of the Scottish Building Regulations Advisory Committee and a SHEFC TQA Assessor (Built Environment).
Sam is an external assessor for UK research bodies and the Italian Government for the assessment of research projects in Architectural Technology and Sustainability. He has served on government, professional and national built environment education committees. Over the last 25 years, Sam has led in excess of 20 major externally funded projects with a value in excess of 30 million Euros.
His main areas of research expertise are in building performance, BIM, sustainability, Smart Cities and knowledge management and he has published and presented nationally and internationally.
